Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
National integration is essential for fostering unity and cohesion in a diverse country like Nigeria, characterized by multiple ethnic, religious, and cultural groups. Print media serves as a platform for promoting national values, highlighting shared interests, and addressing conflicts. In Bida Local Government, Niger State, newspapers and magazines play a critical role in fostering understanding and collaboration among the diverse communities. Through editorials, features, and news reports, print media can emphasize themes of unity, tolerance, and coexistence, reducing divisive tendencies (Bello & Garba, 2024). Research indicates that effective media communication can counter divisive narratives and build trust among communities (Ahmed & Musa, 2023). However, challenges such as media bias, limited access, and sensational reporting can undermine these efforts.
